As a girl who once loved getting Easter baskets, now fast-forward to being a mom of two under two, I am in love with the idea of creating my own Easter basket for my babies and toddler. There is nothing better than celebrating the holidays and curating that feeling of youth and happiness.

Since I know that many mommas are on a budget, I have compiled an easy to view list of amazing diy Easter basket ideas that range from baby to toddler to young kids.

Why you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg creating an Easter gift basket for your children

Holidays add up. I think we all know this. And multiple kids add up. Even if you have one child that you are making a basket for, you will notice how much it costs. My suggestion as a mother currently on a budget: snag the deals post holiday (for future use), use coupons in places like Hobby Lobby or Michaels, and gift small practical items.

The number one gift item to include in your Easter basket for your baby, toddler, or child

The easiest thing to gift that is both oh so fun and practical is a book. You can look around for some fun themed books surrounding Easter, bunnies, chicks, of gift giving.

Instead of a traditional cheap looking basket, opt for a trendy crate! Once your baby, toddler, or child end up dumping out the gifts and goodies, you can use this basket for anything! Use it as a way to ‘organize’ clutter throughout the house. Keep multi piece toys in here or blocks. Maybe even place some stuffed animals in the gift crate.

Another great diy Easter basket idea that you can use for toddler or child is to have their ‘baskets’ actually be a purse or backpack. A sweet and dainty floral print is perfect for the Easter holiday. If you have girly girls, this one is an amazing way to repurpose their diy gift basket.

Baby Items to include in an Easter Basket for Purposeful Play

  • Teethers
  • Pop-its
  • Crinkle, touch and feel, colorful, black and white BOOKS
  • Rattles

Montessori Magnetic Wooden Animal Train Set

A train set is a great gift for a baby because they can learn to recognize animals and cause and effect with the magnets. Not only does this help with purposeful play, this Montessori toy can become a great transitional toy that your toddler will love as well.

Adorable Toddler Easter Basket Filler Ideas

Toddler Easter crates are a great mix of baby items and older aged kid items. You can put their items in a reusable basket or crate, since they are most likely too young to want to use it later on. Add in a few fun items like egg shakers, age appropriate jewelry, fidget poppers, and some fun loopy straws! Adding adorable stuffed animals is a must for the littles.

Crayola Scribble Scrubbies Tub Wash

My toddler LOVES these little figurines. They are all white and have felt like ‘fur’ that you can color using their washable markers! Such a sweet and fun idea that will make GREAT Easter fillers for their gift baskets.

Some older kids will appreciate a more curated Easter gift. If your daughter likes light makeup for her age, include it! A water bottle is a great gender neutral gift idea as well as sanitizer. If your kids don’t care about the basket, get a reusable one or a very cheap one. If you get a cheap one, you can splurge more on their gifts! Add a printable banner (like in this picture; linked above!) for a sweet holiday touch.

I absolutely love everything in this picture. It is perfect inspo for creating a memorable and very much loved Easter gift basket for a kid! If they love a certain character, consider adding this through clothes. Similar to the above inspo pictures for gift ideas, adding straws, jewelry, and banners can fill up their basket.

How about adding a super adorable mermaid doll? Whatever you decide, a young child will love this. Sweet little bracelets, clothes, and magical Easter themed wands are a great way to gift more practical items that are budget friendly.

A Quick Overview of Easter Basket Questions: When to start, other inexpensive filler ideas, and the number one item to gift

  • What are some other cheap filler items to include in an Easter basket?
  • How many items should be included in an Easter basket?
    • However many you are comfortable with gifting. Your budget might allow for a few small items and one more expensive gift. I would aim for 3-5 gifts: books, practical items, and a fun item.
  • What is the number one item to put in an Easter Gift Basket?
    • A book. Studies have shown that children who are read to daily have been exposed to more words by the age of entering school. While this seems pretty obvious, less than half of children get read to daily.
  • What age can I start giving a gift basket for Easter?
    • Any age! Although little babies don’t fully understand the concept of getting a gift, they can still use all the fun and practical gifts that you give them (teethers, books, fun shakers)
  • Should I start preparing an Easter crate early, the way that Christmas gifts are prepared?
    • Give yourself enough time to collect all the items you want, but this doesn’t have to be done too far in advance. Mine are done by the beginning of April (assuming it’s in April).
